FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ATLANTA, October 1, 2024 / — History is being made at the 4th annual Black Women Will Homecoming Event on Saturday, November 16th, 2024 in Atlanta. In just one day, 190 Black female homeowners in Georgia will prepare to transfer $80M+ worth of assets, including real estate, bank accounts and investment accounts, by completing their wills for free. They will also complete their power of attorney documents and healthcare directives to establish order in their families.
This annual event is powered by Thank Me Later Foundation, in partnership with Atlanta Legal Aid, The Fulton County Probate Court, The Georgia Association Of Black Women Attorneys Foundation, The Georgia Association of Paralegals, and Impact Church. More than 150 attorneys from 80+ local law firms will volunteer, along with paralegals, notaries, and general volunteers.
Black Women Will addresses the critical need for estate planning in the Black community. According to NBC, over the next 25 years, an estimated $68 trillion will be transferred from U.S. households to heirs and charities. Black Americans are missing out on the largest wealth transfer in history by not having an estate plan.
“Black families are working so hard to accumulate new wealth that we aren’t paying attention to what our family owns, even if it’s just our grandma’s house,” says Jini Thornton, CPA, and the Executive Director of Black Women Will & the Thank Me Later Foundation. “Black Women Will is a part of the solution to this silent crisis that is preventing the Black community from transferring wealth.”
Participants are pre-selected and go through a multi-month process to draft their legal documents ahead of the event. To date, 296 wills and healthcare directives have been completed at the annual Black Women Will event, and there is a plan to transfer $108M+ worth of assets. The Thank Me Later Foundation also teaches about estate planning through webinars and workshops throughout the year.
The event puts an empowering spin on estate planning, changing the energy of the topic from morbid to motivational to help normalize the conversation. Through the HBCU Homecoming theme, fun giveaways, and upbeat music, the event celebrates women leaving their legacy and protecting their assets through estate planning.
